With the first half of the season already coming to a close and the Fall semester on its last legs, we take a look back at the last few matches the Huskies have had this year.
Men
NEU vs. Colby College (23): 0-9 Loss
NEU vs. Boston University (41): 8-1 WIN
NEU vs. Amherst College (21): 2-7 Loss
Women
NEU vs. Colby College (22): 0-9 Loss
NEU vs. Amherst (18): 0-9 Loss
The men most recently traveled to Amherst College, where they played a very tough side, currently ranked 21st in the nation. The Huskies were only able to force four or more games in three of the nine ladder spots, but two of those three came away with wins in only four games. Benton Mitchel, at #9, played Amherst’s Peter Mack and came away with the win 11-9, 11-7, 6-11, 11-9. #4 Evan Jacobson took down Max Kardon with three straight game wins after dropping the first. His scores were 5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-6.
The men also played a lower-ranked Boston University in November, taking that match by a decisive 8-1 margin. The match was not a blowout, as four of the individual matches went to four games or more. However, #1 TJ Dyer, #3 Kadeem Murrell, #4 Evan Jacobson, #6 Max Kachur, and #9 Benton Mitchell all came away with impressive 3-0 victories over the Huskies’ cross-town rival.
Earlier in November, the men’s and women’s teams met at MIT for a joint match with Colby College. The Northeastern – Colby match has become somewhat of a tradition over the past few years, and this year was no exception. With many fans of both teams packed into MIT’s six-court facility the Huskies battled it out with two very strong squads. While both teams went down 0-9, there was some very strong individual play throughout. #4 Evan Jacobson pushed his opponent to overtime in two of the three games, falling just short at 12-14 both times. Dan Blohm played a cracker of a match at #2, forcing his opponent to five games, two of which went to overtime. TJ Dyer closed out the match for the Huskies, facing William McBrian, Colby’s #1. TJ’s match lasted well into the afternoon, but McBrian came away with the win 11-1, 13-11, 11-3.
