This past weekend, the Husky Men competed in the CSA National Team Championship at Harvard University. The team was competing in the Serues Cup, after finishing the season ranked 43rd. This is the competition the team had been practicing for all year and it was time to compete.
The competition began on Friday as Northeastern took on Lehigh University. Playing at 9, Akhil Bansal took his match in straight sets getting the huskies off to a great start. At 6 and 3, Karan Raja and senior Ahmed Sajjad also took their matches in straight games, ending the first round of matches. Senior Francisco Calderon, playing at 8, dropped his first game but fought back to win 3-1. Kalil Menezes lost in three close games at 5, but our number 2 Karan Kishorepuria kept the momentum going for the huskies winning his match 3-0. At this point the huskies were up 5-1 and had secured the win. Playing at 7, senior Vicente Marquina won his match 3-1. Will Greaves-Tunnell dropped his match playing at 4, but senior Evan Jacobson and Huskies number 1 brought home for the huskies winning his first match of the tournament. In the end the huskies took the match 7-2 and were through to the semi-finals to play Fordham University.
Coming into the second game, the huskies knew this would be a challenging match. Fordham had just come off a convincing 9-0 win against Johns Hopkins. Akhil fought hard but lost 3-1. Karan Raja also dropped his match, but Ahmed managed to win 3-0 giving Northeastern their first win. Francisco took the match at the 8 spot 3-0 and the Huskies were back on level footing with Fordham. Kalil lost his match at 5, but Karan won at 2 giving the huskies a narrow 3-2 lead. In the last round of matches, Vicente, Will and Evan were unable to secure a win and Northeastern lost to Fordham with a match score 6-3.
On Sunday, the huskies took a drive down to Belmont Hill School to play Duke University for 3rd place in the bracket. Unfortunately, the huskies ended up losing this match 6-3 with Ahmed, Francisco and Karan Kishorepuria taking the wins and ended the season at 44th place in the country. At the end of this tournament, we have to give a shout out to this years seniors: Evan Jacobson, Ahmed Sajjad, Vicente Marquina and Francisco Calderon. They have been a great part of the team this season, and we know they are going to be doing great things after graduation.
This marks the end of a roller coaster of a season for Northeastern Men Squash. Thanks for all of the support you have given us throughout the year. We will continue to practice offseason and come back next year even stronger. Until then… GO HUSKIES
