Since our last update, NU squash has had two matches for the women and four matches for the men. Both teams played Colby and BC, while the men took on Brown and Wesleyan in Rhode Island this past weekend.
Both teams lost 0-9 to Colby College, but there were a few great individual efforts by the Huskies – with Olivia Simone taking a game off her opponent at #2 for the women and TJ Dyer, Max Kachur, and Baxter Wathen each taking one game for the men.
Both teams faced BC at home with a record home crowd for the Huskies. The men started off strong, posting a quick 3-0 win at #6 by Baxter Wathen and another impressive five-game win by co-captain Max Kachur at #3. Greg Berson took the #5 match 3-0 while freshman Evan Jacobson took the #2 spot 3-1. #8 Louie Sitwell looked to seal the deal for NU with a fifth match win, but Louie couldn’t quite pull away, losing 2-3 after going up 2-0 against a solid opponent. The Huskies, unrelenting, struck again taking the #7 match through a great five-game effort from freshman Asad Kamal. Co-captain Stan Berenshtein also took the #4 spot 3-1. #1 TJ Dyer fought a great match, but ultimately dropped it in the fifth game despite a great comeback from 1-2 down. The final score for the men was 6-3. The women fought a tough BC team and were only able to capture one match at #1 from middler Jenny Janeck. Both Olivia Simone and Helam Ayano had great five-game matches but were unable to pull away with the win.
The men travelled to Providence to play two very highly-ranked teams – Brown and Wesleyan. Despite some solid squash, the Huskies lost both matches 0-9. Senior co-captain Stan Berenshtein was able to steal a game from each of his opponents and forced two very trying wins for very established squads.
Both teams will be on hiatus for finals and winter break, but start back up right at the beginning of the spring semester. The first match back will be at Bates College on January 12th.
