The Huskies have had a very busy few weeks of squash since our last update. Back on Nov 8, Northeastern battled MIT / Wellesley at their home facility in a very tight Friday-night match. With the men missing #1 TJ Dyer due to an ankle sprain, the Huskies lost an unfortunate 4-5 victory with a very close five-game loss at the #6 position. The women dropped the match to Wellesley by a score of 1-8 with the sole win at #1 from Jenny Janeck.
On November 16 and 17, the Huskies played two higher-ranked opponents, Amherst College and Connecticut College. Amherst took down both the men and women 9-0. The men had a few bright spots though, with #3 Stan Berenshtein going to a very close five-game match with his opponent. #1 Jenny Janeck was able to take a game off of Amherst’s Ericka Robertson. Both teams fared better against Conn College, with the men taking the #1 match and the women taking the #1 and 2 spots. Rookie Evan Jacobson stole a five-game victory away from Conn’s John Sluder, while #1 Jenny Janeck took a quick three-game victory and #2 Olivia Simone came away in a close five-game thriller. The final scores were 1-8 for the men and 2-7 for the women.
Northeastern travelled to Tufts University this past week to play a higher-ranked Jumbos squad. The women had a tough match and were unable to capture any individual games in a 0-9 loss. The men, however, had set their early-season sights on this match and came prepared to play. With the men sweeping spots 4-9, including a comeback from 0-2 down at the #9 spot by Joakim Karlsson. The top of the Huskies’ ladder struggled against a very strong top three from Tufts, but the depth of the men’s ladder carried them to a 6-3 overall victory which will bump them up to #31 or #32 in the next released rankings.
The men then hosted Boston University on Friday evening for the annual match between their cross-town rivals. BU beat Northeastern twice last season for the first time in the program’s history. With a much stronger squad this year, however, the Huskies were committed to reversing that trend. With great performances throughout the entire ladder, the Huskies took the match 8-1, with the only loss coming at #8 in another nail-biting five-game match. With victories over Tufts and BU, the Men look to beat BC and MIT by the end of the season to regain their dominance in the local Boston competition.
The Huskies host Boston College on Tuesday, Dec 3 after the Thanksgiving break. The men then travel to Brown University that weekend for two late-season matches before the Christmas break.
The men are currently 5-4 and ranked #31, while the women are 0-6 and ranked #33.
