The Northeastern Men’s team has started the 2013-2014 season with a very impressive 3-0 record, with commendable wins over Siena College, University of Vermont, and Bryant University in succession on opening weekend.
The Huskies came ready to play and absolutely dominated Siena College, setting the tone for what hopes to be a promising season for this year’s squad. The Huskies held no mercy and did not surrender a game, winning the match 9-0 and winning each individual match three games to none. Freshmen Evan Jacobson and Nich Lailler made their collegiate debuts for the Huskies against Siena, recording their first individual victories in their college squash careers. Jacobson has demonstrated a terrific work ethic throughout the preseason leading into this match and provides significant talent for the team at the top of the lineup. He was able to defeat Siena’s Kristian Payne 11-3, 11-2, 11-1 with relative ease, showing poise and confidence at the number 2 spot. Lailler also played extremely well at number 7, beating his opponent 11-1, 11-0, 11-1, recording the first “bagel” for the Huskies on the young season.
The University of Vermont Catamounts were also unable to record a game against Northeastern, losing to NEU by a score of 9-0. Middler Ben Mitchell made his debut for the Huskies in the college squash association, impressively defeating his opponent 11-0, 11-4, 11-6. Picking up a racket for the first time earlier this fall, Mitchell has displayed a remarkable amount of improvement in such a short amount of time, rapidly turning into a key contributor for this year’s team.
To cap off the three-match sweep on opening weekend, the Huskies took down Bryant University by the score of 7-2. Evan Jacobson and Baxter Wathen were able to masterly overpower their opponents by the scores of 11-2, 11-6, 11-4 and 11-7, 11-2, 11-3 respectively. Junior Co-captain Max Kachur played with fierce determination at the number 3 position, defeating Chase Ruben 11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 11-4. Freshman Asad Kamal was able to record his first collegiate win in a remarkable five game match at the number 7 spot, defeating Bryant’s Akshay Poonia 11-7, 11-8, 9-11, 6-11, 11-4. After being down 2 games to none, Alex Scott-Barrett was able to bear down, overcome adversity, and enable himself to come back and defeat Bryant’s Josh Rubinstein by the score of 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-3, 11-4 at number 9. Junior TJ Dyer was able to upset Bryant’s Harry Waterton in a 5-game thriller of his own at the number 1 spot. Dyer was able to astoundingly come back and win a tight match three games to two after being down 2-1, thanks to the tremendous support from teammates and fans on hand to watch him in what turned out to be the final individual match of the weekend. Overall, it was a phenomenal effort and performance by the Huskies to start the season.
