NEU vs. Tufts University (24): 5-4 WIN
The Huskies took on Tufts University this past week in what was the final home match of the season for the men and the penultimate match for the women. The Huskies held their annual senior night during each match, recognizing the graduating members of the two teams. On the men’s team, four players were recognized with photos from a recent match: #1 DJ Brinkworth, #4 Keith Sproat, #7 Phil Huntley, and #9 Daniel Hsu. On the women’s team, #4 Carly Evans and #8 Sarah Ganley were recognized with gift baskets and flowers.
The men’s match, played on Tuesday, was attended by one of the largest crowds the Huskies have ever had (see photo). Match play started out with #3 Greg Berson who won in 3 tight games (11-9, 11-6, 11-8), #6 Louie Sitwell who had trouble finding his rhythm and went down 0-3, and #9 Daniel Hsu who played an extremely competitive five-game match which he eventually won (10-12, 13-11, 11-9, 12-14, 11-9). With the Huskies up 2-1, the excitement in the building really became palpable. The next set of matches included: #8 Alex Scott-Barrett who went down in three games, #5 Baxter Wathen who played an excruciating five-game match that he could not close out and lost in overtime in game five (11-9, 8-11, 5-11, 11-2, 12-14), and #2 Stan Berenshtein who also lose in a closer five-gamer. Stan was up 2-0 but could not hold on and dropped his match (11-8, 12-10, 4-11, 9-11, 7-11). The match score was then 2-4 against the Huskies. The last round of matches started with #7 Phil Huntley who played a close first two games, but lost in three (9-11, 10-12, 2-11). #4 Keith Sproat notched a four-game win while #1 DJ Brinkworth fought hard but could not push his opponent past three games. #10 Joakim Karlsson pulled out his first college win in four great games. The final matchs score was 6-3 for Tufts. Despite the loss, the Huskies put on a great performance in front of a very supportive crowd and were very close to a big upset with their two game-five losses. The men look forward to Nationals in two weekends.
The women’s match, played on Thursday, was attended by an equally large crowd and was one of the biggest matches for the women all year. Finally playing with their full line-up, the women played a very flip-flopping match. Eight of the nine games were decided in three games. Only #7 went to four games. The women started off with early wins at 7,8 and 9 from Hoai Tran, Sarah Ganley, and Sara Grisales. Tufts came right back with wins at 4, 5, and 6, leaving the top 3 to decide the winner. #3 Kitty Cheung played first and dismantled her opponent, winning 11-5, 11-8, 11-5. #2 Olivia Simone played next, dropping her match 7-11, 6-11, 5-11. #1 Jenny Janeck was last up as the deciding match. With everyone in the building cheering her on, Jenny played some extremely focused squash against a very skilled opponent and took her match in three games, 13-11, 11-9, 11-9. The women won the match 5-4 overall and will be moving up the rankings in preparation for Nationals this weekend.
